BIO
My wife and I began homeschooling our two kids at Heritage around 2005. We stayed with Heritage until they both graduated from high school. Professionally, I earned a BS in Mathematics at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo along with a high school teaching credential. I also earned a MS in Math Education from Oregon State. I have been teaching math for 35 years, the last 32 years at Cuyamaca College where I have taught everything from pre-algebra to calculus to differential equations. In the home-school realm, I taught classes of Economics(2x) and Geometry(2x) for Heritage while my kids were in high school. My own positive experiences as a parent with Heritage compels me to give back now that I have the opportunity. I hope to utilize my experience to support parents and empower your students in learning mathematics.
CLASS FORMAT
The class consists of THREE components.
1) Home learning. Students will use a website called My Open Math (MOM for short) that provides a structured, well-paced presentation of material. During the week students will engage with video instruction links within MOM, and take notes on material presented and complete practice problems from the textbook and within MOM.
2) Academy Class Day on Mondays - Students will receive mini-lectures, engage in individual guided practice and in group problem-solving activities that will enable them to better comprehend and articulate the material. Some of the problems will review material from the past week and some will anticipate the material for the coming week and sometimes I will interject a min-lecture or demonstration where I see extra instruction is needed.
3) ZOOM on Wednesdays - I will hold a zoom session that includes Q&A, class discussions, group problem solving activities and mini-lectures and demonstrations. The Zoom hours are the same as the Monday class times.
COST
$420 per semester/$840 annual - payable directly to the teacher by semester or annually
+ $75 administration fee payable to HCS (non-refundable).
FREE textbook and computer based homework system. I will be using My Open Math, myopenmath.com (which I call MOM for short). Everything is open-source which means the digital textbook is free. You can download it and print it freely as well.
